Nasty Nana
An on going character exploration of a sinister old lady.
Challenge
I was fortunate to take part in the exclusive Pictoplasma Academy held in Berlin over the period of nine days. Each year the founders of the Pictoplasma conference, artist Rilla Alexander, artist Nathan Jurevicius, and guests artists teach the fundamentals of character design and storytelling.
The character I chose to develop was a sassy elderly woman, a sort of mix between my Nana, Blanche, and Baddie Winkle.
Process
Throughout the week and more we did a plethora of exercises to get into our character’s head. From drawing games, to building in clay, to large scale foam sculptures.
We focused on where they would live, what they would do, what they would look like with different proportions. And we developed storyboards for different scenarios. Highly recommend this workshop for other artists.
